A Brazilian biometric passport is issued by the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) in Brazil.

Passport types

Brazil passports are blue biometric Caribbean passports. Four types of passports are issued to citizens:

  • Standard passport (Blue): Issued to Brazilian citizens.
  • Diplomatic passport (red): Issued to government officials and their families who represent Brazil in congresses and overseas matters.
  • Laissez-passers (brown): Issued to foreigners for travel to Brazil under special circumstances.
  • Yellow passport: Issued to refugees and stateless people in Brazil.
  • Emergency Travel Document (ETD): Issued to Brazilians for emergency repatriation.

Passport validity

A Brazil passport is valid for ten years for citizens over 18, 5 years for children aged 4 to 18, and between 1 to 5 years for children up to 4 years old.

The Saint Christopher and Nevis Citizenship Act provides a program attracting foreigners foreign investors to acquire citizenship and a passport: 

Birth: Individuals born in Brazil.

Descent: Individuals born to a Brazilian parent.

Naturalization: Individuals who have lived in Brazil for at least four years (one year for the spouse or child of a Brazilian national or a citizen of a Portuguese-speaking country).

While there isn’t a direct route to citizenship, investors can acquire Brazilian citizenship after four years by purchasing real estate in Brazil through the Brazil Investment Visa VIPER program.

  • National Identity Card (Carteira de identidade Nacional)
  • CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) for non-resident Brazilians
  • One passport-sized photo (3.5×4.5cm)
  • Electoral card or clearance certificate
  • Birth certificate

Important note: When replacing lost or stolen passports, the applicant must submit an affidavit, Passport Recovery Form, and police report to the Federal Police at least one month before applying for a new passport.

  • New or Renewed passport: BRL 180
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged passport: BRL 180
  • Minors passport (4 to 18): BRL 120
  • Minors passport (0 to 4): BRL 60

Brazil Application Process

Brazilian citizens can apply for a passport at their home state’s Federal Police (Polícia Federal) or at a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate overseas.

1. Complete the online passport application

  • Complete the passport application form obtainable from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Submit the required details and generate the GRU payment slip (tax fee).

2. Pay the passport fee

  • The passport fee must be paid before scheduling an appointment with the Federal Police.
  • The standard Brazilian passport fee is R$180.

3. Schedule an appointment

  • After payment, schedule an appointment at a Federal Police Headquarters in Brazil or a Brazilian consular office overseas.

4. Gather required documents

  • Original Brazilian ID (RG) or CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) for Brazilians living abroad.
  • Expired passport (for renewals)
  • Birth or marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Military Certificate (if application)
  • Proof of payment (GRU receipt)

5. Attend the passport interview

  • Bring all documents to the Federal Police Headquarters or consular office.
  • Your biometrics and photo will be taken.

6. Collect the Passport

  • Brazilian passport processing time is about five to ten business days in Brazil.
  • Applicants must pick up the passport in person with their receipt.

Is Brazil a strong passport?

Brazil has a strong passport, which offers visa free entry into 171 countries around the world.

Brazil passport holders can enter the UK without a visa by requesting electronic travel authorization.

Currently, Brazilians can enter all EU countries without visas. However, they will be required to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver from April 2025.

To visit the US as a Brazilian national, you must apply for a B-1/B-2 Visa.

Brazilians are allowed eTA access to the UK for a period of up to 180 days. If you want to move to the UK, however, you will need to apply for the relevant residency visa. 

Brazilian citizens do not qualify for the Canadian visa waiver program and must apply for a visa to travel there.
